A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's major public works projects.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” declared the head of state.
The leader announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the immediate past president, whose term finished the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's strategic vision for the southern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The construction of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid speed, defying predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently raised significant apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the disaster, the head of a key rival party called for an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This stoppage was requested pending a thorough safety audit. The party declared that the situation "demands swift accountability."
In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these strategic undertakings.
